Algorithmic Fabulations
The National Library Foundation, in partnership with VFXRio, is holding its monthly series of meetings Algorithmic FabulationsThis is a space for reflection on the impact of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies on the arts, culture and language.
Aimed at a broad and interdisciplinary audience, the cycle promotes dialog between specialists, researchers, artists, philosophers, technologists and other cultural agents, encouraging critical thinking about the possible futures of technologies.
Mediated by Matteo Moriconi (Brazilian Association of Visual Technology - VFXRio / Visgraf Laboratory - IMPA), the meetings are attended by prominent national and international guests. The talks are broadcast live, with free access to the public, reinforcing the role of the National Library as a center for thought and cultural dissemination in Brazil.

Summary: impacts of artificial intelligence on artistic creation, languages and modes of cultural production, the special guest is Liana Brazil | Partner - Founder and Creative Director of SuperUberwill address the changes in authorship and artistic co-authorship in the era of generative systems. It will be mediated by Matteo Moriconiseries coordinator and Director of Brazilian Association of Visual TechnologyVFXRio) and Researcher at Visgraf Laboratory - Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA).
Liana Brazil: Liana is the co-founder of SuperUber (2002), where she works as creative director and curator. She has curated festivals such as the World Creativity Biennial and the Rio2C Festival. At SuperUber, she creates experiences ranging from individual installations to museums and festivals, and exhibits her work around the world at venues and events such as the UN, the Frost Science Museum and the SxSW Festival (USA), the London Design Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum (England). In Brazil, he has participated in projects such as the Museum of Tomorrow, the Portuguese Language Museum and the Closing Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She recently took part in the creation of the Rio Holocaust Memorial and the set design for the Gil Family's "Nós, A Gente" tour. Liana has published articles and a book on new media and has a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from UFRJ, with a master's degree in Interactive Media from NY University.

Summary: the round table discusses the creative and authorial use of artificial intelligence in audiovisuals, exploring how these technologies are transforming artistic processes, narratives and immersive experiences. Nelson Porto, visual artist and specialist in Virtual Reality, will take part, with mediation by Matteo Moriconi, director of the Brazilian Visual Technology AssociationVFXRio) and researcher at the Visgraf Laboratory - Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA).
Nelson Porto: Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1978, he is a visual artist who uses photography and technology as creative bases to explore new narratives and interactions with reality. A specialist in Virtual Reality, he took part in the documentary Awavena (Emmy, 2020) and co-created the exhibition XR Ink & Fire about the cave paintings of Serra da Capivara, winner of the best VR awards at the Laval Virtual and Cinequest festivals (France). Since 2019, she has dedicated herself to the use of Generative AI for audiovisuals, developing customized workflows and participating in Cinema and Visual Mapping productions. His work has already been exhibited at SP Arte 2021 (Bianca Boeckel Galeria) and Brisa Galeria (Lisbon, 2022). He has extensive experience as a teacher and speaker at events such as Rio2C, POW Festival, Rio Innovation Week, and for institutions such as Sebrae, Agência Tátil, Sindicato da Indústria Audiovisual do Paraná, ECO-UFRJ, MIS-RJ and Festival Curta Cinema. Since May 2024, he has been AI editor for the channel Mediumwhere he develops AI processes for image and video, writes articles on the subject and teaches the channel's AI courses.

Summary: The National Library Foundation and VFXRio held the event "Algorithmic Fabulations: Impacts of Artificial Intelligence on Arts, Culture and Science" - a space for philosophical reflection on the convergences and new paths opened up by artificial intelligence. The event took place on July 9, in digital format, with a live broadcast on the FBN's YouTube channel. The president of the National Library, Marco Lucchesi, welcomed guests Luiz Velho and Matteo Moriconi for a debate on the impacts and possibilities of AI.
Luiz Velho: Senior PQ Researcher at CNPq, full professor at IMPA and lead scientist of the VISGRAF Laboratory. His academic background includes: Systems Analysis from PUC-Rio, BE in Industrial Design from ESDI - UERJ, MS in Computer Graphics from MIT / Media Lab, and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. He directed the first computer-animated film in Latin America. He was a visiting artist at the National Film Board of Canada, a systems developer at Fantastic Animation Machine in New York, a principal engineer at Rede Globo, and a visiting professor at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He has also been a visiting researcher at HP Laboratories and Microsoft Research China.
The meetings are mediated by Matteo Moriconi: technologist and director, co-founder of VFXRio, an ACM Siggraph-affiliated festival dedicated to fostering discussions about the ecosystem of transformative emerging visual technologies with socio-economic relevance in Brazil. With a degree in Chemistry from PUC-Rio, Matteo founded the Virtual Museum of Brazilian Art in 1997, a pioneering project that used the web for creative initiatives, working together with various Latin American artists to create virtual works. Matteo has over 20 years' experience in developing creative projects, including years of training in the technology groups of the Walt Disney Company and Discovery Channel Europe.
