The June 2023 program focuses on the advanced use of technology to enhance and innovate various areas of human knowledge, from the production of visual effects to the exploration of the Metaverse and the integration of technology into music and lighting. Featuring special guests Hao Li, Associate Professor of Computer Vision and Director of the MBZUAI Metaverse Lab, CEO and co-founder of Pinscreen; Julien Bolbach, Visual Effects Supervisor who used Unreal Engine in the production of “Brave Creature”; and Gabriela Cruz, Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan, presenting emerging 19th-century technologies that have shaped contemporary audiovisual media.
VFXRIO LIVE: The Great Illusion: Phantasmagoria of the 19th Century.
Gabriela Cruz, a professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan, delivers the keynote address exploring technological advancements in the era of industrial lighting. Darkness disappears, but new forms of expression emerge. The technology of phantasmagoria creates immersive spectacles, while Romantic composers explore the potential of music. A new spectacular audiovisual culture arises, involving the ability to hear in the dark.
VFXRIO LIVE: Brave Creatures: Real-Time Beauty in a Small World
Julien Bolbach discusses his role as Visual Effects Supervisor on “Brave Creatures,” directed by Adam Valdez (MPC) and created with support from Epic MegaGrant. In this keynote presentation, he highlights how the implementation of Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) facilitated a virtual production workflow, allowing the team to receive instant feedback (moderated by Jan Habib).
