VFXRio Archives: 2015 - 2019 | VFXRio Live 2020 - Present

Welcome to the VFXRio archives. Here we offer a look back at our annual in-person editions between 2015 and 2019, from its inception to the eve of its digital response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, the event was attended by leaders and renowned professionals from the visual effects industry and sponsored by Intel and Globo, as well as the media partnership of CCXP, Omelete and Telecine.

  • 2019

    VFXRio: November 30 to December 2, 2019

    The fifth edition of VFXRio took place on November 30, December 1 and 2 at Casa Firjan in Rio de Janeiro. International guests included pioneer Hao Li, CEO of Pinscreen; Pav Grochola, supervisor and Lead VFX artist at Sony Pictures Imageworks, who was part of the effects team for the Oscar®-winning animated feature "Spider-Man in the Spider-Verse"; and Julien Bolbach, Visual Effects Supervisor at MPC, who presented the making of Walt Disney Pictures' "The Lion King". The VFXRIO program also included Brazil's largest film and TV technology producers. Globo, the event's sponsor, took part with a keynote dedicated to its latest productions; Vetor Zero, Mistika, O2 Filmes and Stratosform presented their latest work. Three panels led by leading industry experts addressed topics such as Digital Humans and Ai Technologies, Innovation, Science and Art and Education for new careers in technology. Three major academic institutions were represented: IMPA, the Vancouver Centre of Digital Media and the Vancouver Film School.

  • 2018

    VFXRio: December 3, 4 and 5, 2018

    The fourth edition of VFXRio took place on December 3, 4 and 5 at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. Among the guests were Kelly Port, creator of Marvel's Thanos, and Max Wood, responsible for the visual effects in Disney's Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The event highlighted trends in the field, including Virtual Reality workshops by Super Uber, making-of effects in TV Globo productions and films such as "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" and "Avengers: Infinity War", as well as masterclasses in MARI technology by Foundry. The main VXF companies in Brazil took part. Paulo Barcellos, Director of Post Production at O2 Filmes, was on the panel led by Jorge Peregrino, President of the Brazilian Film Academy, presenting "Malasartes e o Duelo com a Morte", winner of the Brazilian Film Academy's visual effects award and highlighting O2 Filmes' role as one of the largest effects producers in Brazil. The guests represented various organizations, including Globo, O2, Vancouver Film School, Foundry, Digital Domain, Method Studios, SuperUber, Hogarth WPP, Conspiração, MPC, UNITY, Unreal, StudioKwo, NVIDIA, INTEL, IMPA - VISGRAF and ACM Siggraph.

  • 2017

    VFXRio: December 8 and 9, 2017

    The third edition of VFXRio, held on December 8 and 9 at the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Tomorrow, brought together renowned professionals in visual effects production. A highlight was the presence of Dan Lemmon, winner of the 2017 Oscar for "Mogli - The Wolf Boy", who contributed to the development of the performance capture technique. Richard Clegg, from MPC, shared the challenges he faced when creating the digital character Rachael in "Blade Runner" (1982), a process that took nine months and won him the Oscar in 2018. The event offered lectures, panels and workshops, providing an immersion in the world of visual effects. Among the guests were representatives from renowned organizations such as Globo, Intel, NVIDIA, Weta VFX, MPC, SuperUber, Quanta Post, Museum of Tomorrow, Mistika VR and ACM Siggraph.

  • 2016

    VFXRio: November 28 and 29, 2016

    The second edition of VFXRio, held at the Museum of Tomorrow, brought together renowned experts from Hollywood, Bollywood and Brazil on November 28 and 29, 2016. The event unveiled the secrets behind the striking visual effects in games and film and TV productions, with the presence of producers from "Game of Thrones" and "Star Wars". Sponsored by Telecine with the support of the Museum of Tomorrow and the Rio de Janeiro City Secretariat for Science and Technology, VFXRio offered lectures and an enriching chat with global producers. In addition, the Museum hosted a detailed exhibition on the history of visual effects in cinema, featuring 16 emblematic films. The guests represented leading organizations such as Globo, PIXOMONDO, Industrial Light and Magic, Strotostorm, Nerdeo, Design LAB, Screenyug Creations PVT and ACM Siggraph.

  • 2015

    VFXRioDecember 1st and 2nd, 2015

    The first edition of VFXRio brought to the country the head of the "Call of Duty: Black Ops III" studios and the person responsible for the character Groot in "Guardians of the Galaxy". Some of the most important names in visual effects from the world of movies and games arrived in Brazil at the beginning of December 2015. They came to VFXRio, the first event exclusively dedicated to visual effects in the country, which took place on December 1 and 2 and was sponsored by Telecine and also featured the special participation of Mike Sanders, Senior Director of Activision Central Studios, on December 3 at CCXP in São Paulo. The guests represented the following organizations: Globo, O2, Conspiração, IMPA - Visgraf, VES, ACM Siggraph, MPC and ACTIVISION.
