VFXRio Archives: 2015 – 2019 | VFXRio Live 2020 - Present
VFXRio is a festival affiliated with ACM Siggraph, established in 2015 by the Brazilian Association of Visual Technology. Its objective is to promote discussions about emerging visual technologies and their socioeconomic relevance. VFXRio Live was created in response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, introducing, from July 2020, a program of online keynotes and presentations in digital format. Here you can find a chronology of the programs that began in 2020 up to the most recent editions.

2024
VFXRio: OCTOBER 25 AND 26, 2024
VFXRio at the Possible Futures Festival – October 25th and 26th, 2024: VFXRio had a special participation in the Possible Futures Festival, which took place at Casa Firjan. The event explored the convergence between artificial intelligence and creativity in the keynote “What can art teach us about the limits of the machine?”, presented on October 25th by the pioneer in computer vision, Stanford professor David Stork. On October 26th, Matteo Moriconi, director of VFXRio, led the masterclass “End of Certainties – IoT, Cloud and AI in the Interpretation of Climate Patterns”, highlighting the practical application of these technologies in the analysis of environmental data. The masterclass “The Generative Weatherman” was a highlight, presenting an integrated system that combines IoT, web processing and AI to create a virtual weather forecast presenter. This avatar, powered by real-time weather sensor data and AI technologies, provides a dynamic and interactive interpretation of weather conditions. The experience not only demonstrated the potential of technological integration, but also made complex information accessible, capturing the public's imagination.

2023
VFXRio Dance: SEPTEMBER 7 AND 8, 2023
VFXRio Dance - September 7th and 8th, 2023: VFXRio begins a new chapter with VFXRio Dance in partnership with the innovation hub in Rio de Janeiro - Casa Firjan, exploring the intersection between dance and technology, marking the return to in-person events after the end of the COVID lockdown. Over two days, keynotes and workshops were held with the participation of national and international experts. The event had international support from Swissnex, Cie Gilles Jobin, and Visgraf - IMPA. The first day of the event concluded with a live performance in extended reality, performed in real time for the first time in Brazil, of Gilles Jobin's award-winning show Cosmogony, connecting geographically separated dancers in real time. Globo's Innovation Team presented the powerful fusion between dance and technology, revealing the behind-the-scenes creation of content for real-time broadcast.

VFXRio Live: JUNE 7, 2023
VFXRio Live - June 7, 2023: This event highlights the advanced use of technology to foster innovation in various fields, from visual effects production to the exploration of the Metaverse and the historical integration of technology in music and lighting. Hao Li, Associate Professor of Computer Vision and Director of the MBZUAI Metaverse Lab, discusses the exponential growth of AI and its profound impact on the Metaverse and VFX. Julien Bolbach, Visual Effects Supervisor, shares valuable insights on the use of Unreal Engine 5 in the production of "Brave Creatures". Gabriela Cruz, Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan, discusses gaslight and emerging 19th-century technologies that shaped the contemporary audiovisual landscape, emphasizing the continuity and transformation at the intersection of technology and the arts.

2022
VFXRio Live: 1 de JULY, 2022
VFXRio Live - July 1st, 2022: The keynote "New Media, Art and Narratives" highlighted metaverse design research, offering insights into the creative process combined with emerging technologies. The motivations discussed centered on the search for extended immersive experiences, with narratives that establish a path of collective learning. It featured the collaboration of Matteo Moriconi - VFXRio, Luiz Velho, professor at IMPA, and Bernardo Alevato - PUC-Rio. Following this presentation, VFXRio was invited to coordinate the workshop "Imagining Futures with AI" at Casa Firjan during the Possible Futures Festival on November 26th, 2022.

VFXRIO Live: JUNE 8, 2022
VFXRio Live - June 8, 2022: Dalai Felinto, Blender's development coordinator, discusses the relationship between developers and artists in Blender. He presents the development process of Geometry Nodes and the recent Open Movies from Blender Studio. The event, moderated by Rafael Vallaperde of Lightfarm Studios, included the launch of a series of Metaverses created with Blender under the Creative Direction of Matteo Moriconi, co-founder of VFXRio. VFXRio also published the essay "The History of Metaverse Art," an in-depth analysis exploring the evolution of immersive art, from Renaissance paintings to current metaverses and NFTs. We investigate how artists, throughout time, have consistently sought innovative ways to deceive our senses and provide new perspectives on reality.

VFXRio Live - March 26, 2022: Siggraph Day provides a unique insight into the SIGGRAPH program, the world's leading event for computer graphics, animation, and innovation since 1974. As a SIGGRAPH partner since 2015, VFXRio joins a global community of artists, programmers, educators, filmmakers, designers, and other industry professionals and researchers to share the latest news, techniques, and research shaping the future of computer graphics and interactive technologies.

2021
VFXRIO Live: DECEMBER 4 AND 5 – 2021
VFXRio Live - December 4th and 5th, 2021: Launch of the Multivision Manifesto: Reflections of Human Imagination. Addressing the trajectory of technological accelerations since the time of the Greek philosophers, focusing on their influence on human and collective perception throughout history. The manifesto discusses everything from Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" to simulations in a digital world in the film "The Matrix". The program featured a keynote address, "New Media for an Expanding Reality," by Professor Luiz Velho, from Visgraf Lab and IMPA. It also included a meeting of the Space-XR group in the Metaverse for a Fireside Chat with Liana Brazil, co-founder of SuperUber. This edition of VFXRio also highlighted a presentation by Globo's visual effects team, focusing on the production of visual effects during the pandemic with fully remote teams.

VFXRIO Live: SEPTEMBER 4, 2021
VFXRio Live - September 4, 2021: Hal Hickel, animation director at Industrial Light and Magic, presents “Creatures, Droids, and Ships: The VFX of The Mandalorian Season 2”. Hickel discusses the visual effects of the second season of The Mandalorian: from the creation of Baby Yoda (Grogu) to Krayt Dragon and much more. Moderated by Pablo Bioni.

VFXRIO Live: JULY 24, 2021
VFXRio Live - July 24, 2021: Ennio Torresan presents Creativity and Storytelling in Animation, addressing the main creative technological transformations in the world of animation over the last 30 years. He discusses how Dreamworks tackled the challenge of Covid-19 to create Spirit Untamed, the first major animated film released in theaters during the pandemic and entirely produced remotely, revealing the creative process of one of Brazil's greatest animators. Moderated by Lucia Modesto.

VFXRio Live: FEBRUARY 7, 2021
VFXRio Live - February 7, 2021: Alvy Ray Smith, one of the world's leading technology figures. The co-founder of Pixar and pioneer of Lucasfilm, winner of two Academy Awards for his contribution to cinema, discusses his new book, "A Biography of the Pixel." Matteo Moriconi and Rodrigo Hurtado, from VFXRIO and XCave Studios respectively, created a conceptual video for the event, using Unreal Engine technology and inspired by the works of Moebius and Joseph Campbell. The video takes the viewer on a technological journey to Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the hero's quest for self-discovery. Moriconi also launched the Active Presence Manifesto, emphasizing the importance of democratizing artificial intelligence.

2020
VFXRio Live: DECEMBER 4 AND 5, 2020
The VFXRio Live event – December 4th and 5th, 2020 – featured an opening keynote by Roberto Poli, UNESCO Chair in Anticipatory Systems, and the participation of Gabriel Pinto, author and innovation researcher. Discussions on the ecosystem of visual technologies and gamification methodologies were promoted, with contributions from companies such as Baobab Studios, Digital Domain, Globo, ACM Siggraph, IMPA-Visgraf, SuperUber, Arvore, and Google. A highlight was the "Fireside Chat" with Philip Rosedale, a visionary in immersive experiences, moderated by Liana Brazil, co-founder of SuperUber. On December 5th, everyone celebrated the conclusion of VFXRio Live at the AfterParty, a metaverse specially designed with high-fidelity audio and a performance by DJ Rodrigo Pena.

Participating companies included Industrial Light and Magic, Penrose, Globo, Intel, The Buckminster Fuller Institute, IMPA-Visgraf, SuperUber, and Cie Gilles Jobin. The event stood out for its in-depth discussions on the ecosystem of visual technologies and gamification methodologies shaping the global socioeconomic future, bringing together experts in visual effects, entertainment, and immersive media.
